What woke me was not the brightness of the sun. When it hit, I merely turned over and tucked my head. No. What woke me was when I tucked my head, and rubbed my face on ground so dry it might have been cobblestones. I opened my eyes to stare at a brown sand, so parched that it had clumped together and cracked.
Then I felt the heat.
Pushing myself up, I looked around, disoriented. I had, after all, just been in my bed in my hut back on Tabula Rasa. This place was entirely new. But it felt... as though I should know it.
Parched brown earth stretched away on all sides, the cracked clods like jagged tiles on a very boring mosaic. At the horizon, grey mountains stood, shimmering as the sun rose higher. The sky above was shockingly blue. I turned a full circle, staring, mouth agape. "Is this... Arivaipa?"
The heat suggested it was so. I looked down at myself. I was wearing the clothes I'd worn yesterday, on the Island: my military dress, augmented with items from my ITF uniform. My holster was around my waist... but no sidearm. I tried not to worry about that. It was easier than you think, for I also noticed that I didn't have my pack, and without it, no water.
I turned again, looking around, but I was utterly alone.
Until a gleam caught my eye. I turned. It wasn't a mirage. Something, not too far away, was reflecting the sun hard at my eyes. It was either water, or a mirror. Either way, heading for it was better than just standing there.
Pacing myself against the rising heat, I marched towards the gleam.

Date: 2013-02-09 02:19 am (UTC)From:Assuming he could avoid it himself.
It wasn't long before he saw two things that caught his attention. First, what looked like an abandoned vehicle in the distance and second, on the other side of him, a head of red hair that looked very familiar. "Nyana! That you?!" He waved. From this distance and in this glare he couldn't quite make her out, but he was pretty sure. He didn't know that many red-heads, though, so it was either the kid from magic-land or an ex-Russian spy. Either way, it would be a pair of helping hands.

He stood up and brushed off his clothes, already lamenting how sunburned his head was going to get. He shaded his eyes from the glare off the sand and realized there were others around, as well as some large ugly vehicle, hopefully others from the island. He knew he wasn't going to be lucky enough to have one of them be Anatoly. "Hello? Whose out there?"

"What is that? A jitney of some kind?" I walked towards it, keeping an eye out for hiding places and things that might be hiding in them.

Figured some bona fides wouldn't hurt, even though he was in his pajamas and she wasn't much better off. "And yeah, that's the only shelter and shade we've got, we should check it out."

From:Day 1 Travel: Edison Museum (Nyana/Nikola, Phil/Lex)
Date: 2013-03-02 03:48 pm (UTC)From:I glared at Nikola as he bounded out of the car. Truthfully, I appreciated the chance to stretch my legs. The inside of the van was stifling and cramped. But I did not appreciate how he had hounded us to stop here. The road sign to Tabula Rasa beckoned. We were waisting time. And as Nikola bounded up the steps with -- I had to say this -- clear and sinister intent, I suspected that we might end up wasting a lot of time.
I looked to Sieur Coulson for permission, then followed Nikola through the doors into the museum.

"We would be making even better time without this ridiculous rest stop. I hope you are ready to speed out of here when he eventually blows the place up." At least the fireworks would be amusing.

He was of course going to attempt to blow the place up. But that was perfectly a legitimate idea. He'd do it remotely, wait until the others were out first of course but then revenge would be his.

From:Day 2 - Rest Stop (For all four)
Date: 2013-03-22 12:24 pm (UTC)From:But I realized this was part of the test. We had to keep our heads. So I did.
Until...
I cleared my throat. "I have to go potty."

Date: 2013-03-23 02:49 am (UTC)From:Well, he wasn't, not really, they'd have to listen to the man's whining and crying from the pain and while it would be satisfying, he wondered about long-term hearing loss for the rest of them. But over the last days of travelling, it had certainly become his favorite fantasy. Every kick, every comment, every annoyance was quietly logged mentally, and Phil was waiting for him to step over the line. Until then, Tesla was ignored as much as humanly possible.
Nyana's request dragged him from his thoughts and he looked up into the rear-view mirror. The timing could have been worse. "I think I saw a sign for a rest-stop up ahead. We can all get out and stretch. Maybe get something to eat."
no subject
Date: 2013-04-05 02:55 am (UTC)From:"Did you shit in your pants then Tesla?" He said through gritted teeth, lifting one eyelid lazily to half glare at the other man. "Because you are the only one acting childishly."

Date: 2013-04-05 03:30 pm (UTC)From:"A rest stop is fine," I said. Better somewhere private than in a ditch somewhere. Even with two out of three people with the best intentions, it's still awkward being the only young woman in a van of four.
